The growing season is upon us and we are busybusybusy here at the Harvest Moon Learning Centre. Most everything is now planted, the rainwater tanks are full, and we’re officially ready for summer.

We’ve had visits from the kindergarten classes of Crystal City Early Years school and an overnight for Grade 10s from Maples Met School in Winnipeg. We hosted a Hunter Education course and a nature-inspired Women’s Health Day and sent staff to help out at the Binney Water Festival. And we were blown away at the turnout for our annual Perennial Exchange, where we learned a ton about Essential Dahlia Care from Nika at The Bear Necessities Acres.

Summer Programming

Lauren is back for one more summer to head up our summer programming. We’ve confirmed the dates for our New Moon Kids Camp (July 22 to 24) and registration is now open for campers aged 7 to 11. To register, or for more information, email info@harvestmoonsociety.org.

Artist Talks

Emerging artists Jessica Beaugrand and Mae Desmond are spending time in Clearwater as part of our Recent Graduate Residency. After graduating from the University of Manitoba’s School of Art, they’re embedding themselves in all things Harvest Moon as a way of filling their cups and informing their art.

They’ll be giving Artist Talks on Thursday, June 19th at the Harvest Moon Learning Centre. All are welcome, and we’ll also attempt to stream their talks via Zoom so get in touch if you’d like to tune in online.

First Aid #2

There is still space available in our upcoming Emergency First Aid course with Canadian Red Cross Instructor Kent Lewarne on Thursday, July 3. If you’d like to learn lifesaving first aid and CPR skills, let us know asap.

HMS Scholarship Winner #1 - Alara Krahn

Alara Krahn is going in to her second year at the University of Manitoba, studying towards a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy. She grew up on a third-generation grain farm near Clearwater and is one of three winners of this year’s Harvest Moon Scholarship. Congratulations Alara!

Festival News

Tickets for the 24th Perennial Harvest Moon Festival will be going on sale on Tuesday, July 15th! This year’s Festival will be held September 12 to 14 in Clearwater, MB. Applications for market vendors or workshop presenters are now open at www.harvestmoonfestival.ca. More details coming soon!

Ink By K

An interesting opportunity has come our way. Tattoo artist Katelyn Norman will be staying at the HMLC in late July and she’s going to set up a temporary tattoo studio! You can check out her work on Instagram or Facebook and, if you like what you see, you can reach out to her (inkbyktattoos@gmail.com) and book an appointment.

Overnight accommodations in our dorm rooms or cabins can be arranged. Come on out to Harvest Moon and get inked!

Land Based Learning Interpreter

Our beloved Lauren has completed her Education degree at Brandon University and we’re so proud of her. Congratulations Ms. Treble!

We’re also a little saddened at the prospect of having to try and replace her. If you’ll be between the ages of 15 and 30 next summer and are looking for a unique employment opportunity in an extraordinary environment, reach out and let us know that you’re interested.

Duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

• Facilitate outdoor, experiential learning activities for school field trips, youth agency visits, and university courses.

• Assist with developing cross-curricular sustainability education packages for teachers that make use of the on-site learning infrastructure; including a greenhouse and gardens, water conservation projects and interpretive nature trail.

• Enhance the presence of indigenous teachings and opportunities for cultural appreciation in Harvest Moon Society programs.

• Lead activities at day camps for children aged 7 to 11 and youth aged 12 to 15.

• Consult with local experts and volunteers to develop learning tools that transmit the local history of the region; from stories of historical and contemporary life in rural Manitoba, to transformations in agricultural practices, as well as the stewardship and conservation of natural resources

Looking ahead to Clearwater 150 in 2026

Clearwater’s resilience was showcased last year with the Field of Dreams and it’s coming back next year for the Clearwater 150 celebration!

Next summer, August 14-15, 2026, Clearwater will be celebrating its 150th birthday with a weekend full of memories and baseball and kids’ and family activities. We hope you’ll come join us.

Harvest Moon will be organizing the beer gardens at the Field of Dreams and we’ll be looking for some help. Mark those dates off on your calendar and come celebrate Clearwater.
