Sustainable Agriculture
Sustainable agriculture is central to the Harvest Moon vision of healthy land and healthy communities. Workshops on sustainable agricultural are offered periodically, in cooperation with members of the Harvest Moon Local Food Initiative, to educate about the techniques and benefits associated with a more holistic approach to food production.
“So You Wanna Raise Pigs?” Pastured Pork Workshop
There is a growing interest in pastured pork as a method of sustainable agriculture. Raising pigs on pasture is not only more humane and natural for the animals, it is also environmentally sound and produces meat that is more nutritious and, as many people discover, flavorful as well. Family farms raise pigs to pass the benefits of pastured pork onto to their friends, family, and other eaters while engaging in a local and just food system. Organizations such as Fort Whyte Farms even use pastured pork and other sustainable agriculture methods as learning tools in youth outreach programs.
If you’re interested in raising your own pigs, or are simply eager to learn more about pastured pork – such as the benefits, and how animals are raised, etc. – there will be a pastured pork workshop later this month that all are welcome to attend. Harborside Farms, McDonald Farms, in conjunction with the Harvest Moon Local Food Initiative present “So You Wanna Raise Pigs?” a one-day pastured pork workshop for beginners. The workshop will cover topics such as purchasing, feeding, pasturing, breeding and farrowing, safe handling practices, and health.

When: Saturday, July 24th – 10:00 am
Cost: $40 includes lunch and a light snack
