Homegrown Leaders
Homegrown Leaders is designed to engage youth as leaders in their rural communities, to celebrate the importance of sustainable rural livelihoods, local food production and to promote pride in their own hometowns.

For many rural youth, it’s difficult to see fulfilling and financially-rewarding opportunities in a rural way of life that has proved extremely challenging for farm families over the years.
But there are now some exciting opportunities in sustainable agriculture and rural environmental conservation, and through the Harvest Moon Society, Homegrown Leaders will provide education on these opportunities via hands-on, practical workshops and field tours.
It will also place youth in leadership roles, and give them the opportunity to pass on this education to others.
“I am hoping that the Homegrown Leaders project can provide youth with a sense of hope, opportunity and pride in their own community and rural way of life—that which I felt I lacked when growing up in a small rural town. Now, at 25, I am watching myself move back to my hometown to farm and feel a genuine sense of pride in doing so. Let’s hope that projects like Homegrown Leaders will help encourage other young people to pursue the rewarding lifestyle of producing and providing healthy, nutritious, local food for their themselves and others!”
