Eco-Challenge

Partnered with the Prairie Spirit School Division, the Pembina Valley Conservation District, and Manitoba Food and Rural Initiatives (MAFRI), among others, this annual event brings Grades 7 and 8 students from local schools together to participate in experiential education in the outdoors. Activities address themes related to environmental conservation and ecosystems, geography, science, and sustainable food and communities.

If you are interested in having your school’s students involved, or if you would like to participate as a volunteer, workshop or station facilitator, please contact Coordinator Michelle Schram at: michelle.schram@gmail.com, (204) 529-2083 or fill out the online registration / feedback form.

Eco-Race

On September 12, 2008, the first annual “Eco-Race” (former name) was hosted by the Harvest Moon Society and the Prairie Spirit School Division.

The race was held in Clearwater at the Harvest Moon Centre and took in the “Lessons from the Land” hiking trail. Students from Pilot Mound High School, Manitou–Nellie McClung Collegiate, and Cartwright School grade 10 classes attended the event.

Carol Guilford at the adobe ovenThe Eco-Race was composed of three 1-hour workshops. The emphasis of these workshops was on healthy communities and healthy living. The students throughout the day attended a workshop on Global and Local Foods put on by Kristina McMillian, a Bread Making workshop put on by Carol Guilford and Carol Orr, and GPS workshop put on by Cliff Greenfield (Pembina Valley Conservation District) where the students were then able to take the GPS systems down on the trail and participate in a scavenger hunt. With financial support from the Pembina Valley Conservation District a lasagna lunch was served to all students and volunteer staff.

A big thank you goes out to volunteers for the event and the Conservation District for the great meal. The entire day was a huge success and we are excited about where this will go in coming years.
